Bicycle

Palmer Lake

I dragged my bike out for the first time this spring and went on a couple short rides this weekend.  I’ve been anxious about doing this again because of the problems with my knees that developed last summer (exacerbated by biking, most likely).  The first little ride I did went fine, and it felt so good to be exercising and just being outside in the fresh air.  Yesterday I went for a longer ride around a small lake near my house; the trail is about three miles plus the distance to and from the lake.  I don’t know if I pushed myself too hard too soon or if my knees are just permanently messed up.  But almost immediately after I got off the bike they began to hurt.  They’re still hurting today and I’m shuffling around like an old lady.  This is very depressing; I was hoping so much to be able to go on bike rides again.  Now I’m not sure if I should just wait this out or if I should go back to the orthopedic doctor whom I saw last fall.  I want to exercise, dammit!  I guess my final option is doing aquatic workouts at Courage Center with a bunch of geriatrics (who probably pee in the pool).  Great.

Boo. I’m sorry, Angela. Are your knees still hurting? Do they hurt when you walk, as in for exercise? You would hope that something as low-impact as bicycling wouldn’t cause any problems, but we all know the slightest things can affect our joints.

I hope you’re feeling better by now. I’m feeling a little achey after shooting a wedding on Friday. (which I haven’t forgotten your emal, I will reply to it very soon!)

    Take care of yourself!

Hey Liz, thanks for the comment. Knees are better, but I haven’t been back on the bike yet. My knees don’t usually hurt when walking, but both of ankles are bad, so walking is difficult anyway. Ah, that’s cool you did a wedding! Looking forward to your email! Hope you’re having a good weekend. :)

I know you’re sore as heck, but I think it’s good that you actually got out and did it. I’ve been so sick and so scared of how little I may be able to do at this point, I haven’t done anything.
Wishing you speedy healing and more bike rides.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to this. Things have been a little crazy! Thank you for the nice comment. My knees are better, thankfully, but I haven’t been back on my bike yet. I hope to try it again sometime later this week. Despite the possibility for more pain and flare-ups, I definitely do feel better from getting some kind of exercise. It’s hard though when your entire body is hurting, I know. Hang in there yourself!
